Every year, there is a moment when changes in the calendar or temperature can cause your workout routine to hit a wall. In the fall and spring, you may enjoy walking outdoors, but the extremes of winter and summer keep you inside. Alternatively, you may be a dedicated swimmer in the warmer months, but the colder weather causes you to hit pause. When our routines do not comply with the changes in weather, the all-or-nothing voices tempt us to quit entirely and just wait to start after the seasons change. Maybe instead of waiting for the weather to change, we can work to change our mindset.
As a medical student and leader of a fall prevention program for older adults, I see the benefits of regular muscle strengthening and balance activities for our participants every day.
For older adults, waiting for changes in the weather can come with hidden risks. Off season exercise breaks sacrifice mobility, strength, balance and muscle, all of which are crucial for preventing falls.
Consistency, rather than intensity, is the key to decreasing the risk of falling and continuing aging in a healthy way. Do not let the weather dictate your health, instead create a more adaptable routine.
One of the most powerful, and free, tools available to help you maintain consistency and adaptability is SilverSneakers. This program, and others similar, provides free access to gyms in the community for individuals 65+ and are often included by Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C), some Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies and other private insurance plans.
These programs give access to:
- Specialized classes like yoga and tai chi that focus on strength and balance
- Equipment, walking tracks, and swimming pools at different participating gyms and community centers
- Online on-demand videos and LIVE classes
Many older adults are currently enrolled in a plan that covers this free gym membership but are unaware until they call their insurance provider. Asking about these programs before a new year is especially important, as this information may help you select a health insurance plan for the year that best fits you and your health care goals.
If you do not qualify for SilverSneakers or similar programs, you can incorporate movement in your everyday activities. Some examples are:
Many malls open their doors before stores open for people to walk in a level and climate-controlled environment. Additionally, this option provides access to restrooms and benches.
Another great option is to search for free on-demand exercise classes online. Resources like YouTube have a large variety of free videos for everyone. Search “seated exercises,” “beginner tai chi” or “chair yoga” and find an instructor or class that motivates you!
Do not let weather break your momentum. Perfection is the enemy of good and adaptability is the secret to consistency.
Take these easy steps today to improve your future:
- Take five minutes right now to call your insurance provider and see if your plan includes SilverSneakers or a similar free gym membership.
- Throw away the “all-or-nothing” mindset. Some movement is always better than none.
- Be sure to talk to your health care provider about the type and amount of physical activity that is right for you.
Stay strong, mobile and mentally fit with regular exercise. Your future self will thank you!
